"Advocacy is about speaking up for children and young people. Advocacy is about empowering children and young people to make sure that their rights are respected and their views and wishes are heard at all times. Advocacy is about representing the views, wishes and needs of children and young people to decision-makers, and helping them to navigate the system."
(Definition taken from the National Standards for the Provision of Children's Advocacy Services,
Department of Health 2002).
One thing we are growing in, and see the necessity of doing more in, is our work in advocacy. Over the years we have had some form of case advocacy in the training we have done and the projects we have been involved in. With the information we have collected in training and in the community of Fisantekraal , we have found ourselves in the position of having to do more around systems advocacy for this community because of the complex social context the people live in. Currently we are working out within the context of the FST a place to start doing more community driven systems advocacy for the children of Fisantekraal.
In our collaboration with the Connect Network we are going to be a part of initiatives that do policy advocacy that hopefully will effect more communities than just Fisantekraal.
